How to Stack Your Chains

Whether you love a layering moment or are new to this trend, we’ve got you covered. Our Chains Bar is a tool to help you visualize the JB Chains catalogue virtually before you bring them home, and will make you feel like a layering pro in no time.
An easy shortcut to building a layered look lies in the power of three: length, gauge (or width) and texture. Once you have a handle on how these different elements function, you can play with ease and have fun. Remember: these rules are a general guideline; there’s nothing absolute when it comes to designing your own look. And we highly recommend you mix in your own heirlooms or beloved pieces when you’re stacking.

The Power of Three
Mix texture, length and
gauge for a super stack.

Stack from top to bottom:
Surfside Duo Chain, Priya Snake Chain Necklace, Studio Pendant.
LENGTH
You want to consider how the long chain lays on your chest. Does it compete with the length of another chain or does it create an inch or two of breathing room? Building out space so chains aren’t competing for attention is ideal. Many of our new chains, like our Lou Chain, boast a 22 inch length, which is ideal for wider necks or those who feel more comfortable with a longer chain.
Your neckline also dictates how you’ll build a look, as some chains will compete with your top—more on that later.
GAUGE
This is the width of your chain. To give your layered look a really modern feel, you’ll want to ensure you have a mix of gauges. At JB, we have round chains, linked chains, square chains, herringbone snake chains, triangular link chains (like our super shiny Rae Chain) and more— so the texture options are vast.
Mix until you get to the point where it feels right for you.

TEXTURE
Just like how a perfect sandwich has a variety of texture (like crunchy lettuce to balance the soft bread), you want to mix up your stack too, creating visual interest for the eye. For example, a series of curb chains at different lengths is pretty, but...a little forgettable. Try pairing that curb chain with a Miami link chain, or an intricate square chain and whisper-thin round chain (like the Inez Choker) to build something more special. See how the light reflects off your pieces—the sun is always a good indicator of how that texture is working for you, catching the light in different ways.
