Dress for Success
We’re proud to be the national partners of not-for-profit organization, Dress for Success Canada. Throughout the year at JENNY BIRD, we have been raising awareness, funds and efforts through events, campaigns and product collaborations.
There is such a beautiful synergy to our partnership with Dress for Success, as we champion causes that are geared towards economic empowerment. Our ethos, at JENNY BIRD, is found on the importance of elevating and lifting those around us up, as we aim to create opportunities for long-term self-reliance through meaningful work.
Last month, our team had the pleasure of volunteering at the Dress for Success Toronto boutique for the second time. The day consisted of processing, sorting, organizing, and lots and lots of hanging. There wasn’t a moment where we weren’t needed. Our team of 14 was continuously busy throughout the day. The energy and appreciation from the Dress for Success Toronto team was palpable.
Dress for Success is an organization with services that are valued and used often — whether that’s through donation drop-offs or the client services offered. Admittedly, it can sometimes feel overwhelming navigating the ways in which to get involved and how to do so. Lucky for you, there’s a Dress for Success affiliate program in just about every country and city. We’ve narrowed down the different routes you can take to make a difference with Dress for Success. How to Get Involved
How did you find the courage, at 17 years old, to leave everything behind to pursue your education?
I don’t know if I would call it courage that drove me to leave everything behind. I believe it was partly the naivety that comes with being young. I was definitely fuelled by a strong sense of injustice and unfairness. At that time, I honestly thought that it would be as simple as relocating and picking up my studies where I left off that would eventually lead to a life that I wanted to live. Like my parents, however, I didn’t have the slightest understanding of what my path would actually entail. Nor, on a positive note, did I realize that it would ultimately take an entire community of people – some I would know, some I would never know — to help me out of my situation toward my goal.
What motivated you to keep chasing your goal? In your experience, did you find that envisioning what you wanted, assisted in helping you get where you needed?
I kept going because of people like K from the youth shelter, the Vice Principal who gave me five dollars every now and then for lunch, the warm and non-judgmental staff and volunteers at Dress for Success.
I was motivated by people who didn’t even know me. I was motivated by a community of people who wanted to help in their own way, loudly cheering me on or quietly deciding not to kick me out of the library after it closed. Their belief in me reassured my belief in myself; their vision for me was something to reassure myself when I felt the most hopeless about my future.
